Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Linguistics was founded in 1998. Our department continues its educational and scientific activities with 1 professor , 1 associate professor, 2 assistant professor, 4 lecturers and 2 research assistants.
In line with its mission, the Department of Linguistics adopts a broad and a holistic perspective that projects language and its biological, psychological and sociological aspects as a single whole.
Besides the courses started under the name of Vocational English in 2002-2003 and the other English courses instructed intensively in accordance with the updated programme in 2008-2009, German and Russian Languages are also instrusted by the experienced lecturers. Additionally, elective courses begining from third class enable students to use the foreign language effectively. Within the scope of Bologna Process carried out in our university in 2012, our department’s programme was updated according to the standards of European Universities and many elective courses from other departments were added in order to have our students get more reformist and libertarian education.
In concern with the educational activities in our department , our students can find all kinds of sources in the central library and the department library which is established in 2009.
The mission of Department of Linguistics is primarily to contribute the studies on Turkish Linguistics, and to present competent studies in this context of research as well as to conduct studies with respect to the fields considered to be missing in linguistics literature in Turkish, and to provide educational and scientific contribution in terms of proper use and training of Turkish. Besides, we aim to find out both national and international studies and theoretical and practical studies which describe the relation between Turkish and the other languages within the scope of comparative methods.
In this context, one of the primary goals of our department.is to educate people who will work on language in media and goverment agencies and use the knowledge which is acquired in our department.
Our vision is to be an internationally recognized and mostly preferred university known for language studies and excellence in student learning.
Graduate students will be able to have the chance to work as an editor in press and the other corparations, and they can be be a consultant of the communication units in these corparations and to work as a textwriter. additionally, there are some grad students who have set up translation agencies and continue to work in this field and some of our students work as lecturers in the school of foreign language of the universities and the courses. Also, thanks to the knowledge acquired in neurolinguistics and applied linguistics courses, students will have the opportunity to have academic studies.
Our students will not have a claim to get a teaching certificate.
